What We Think About Civil Engineering
For us, civil engineering is much more than a technical endeavor. It is certainly that, but also an opportunity to help shape the urban landscape and influence its character and livability.
Civil engineers design the water, sewer, street, and drainage systems. These are the fabric which shapes the urban landscape as it expands, and sustains it as a habitat for most of mankind. Viewed from this broader perspective, civil engineers play a profound role in people’s lives. Those who understand this will not only be better professionals, but will find their work more meaningful.
Our Supplemental Code of Ethics
We adhere to the code of ethics adopted by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the State Board of Professional Engineers. We have adopted three supplemental codes as follows:
- Campaign contributions to elected officials of clients or prospective clients are not allowed under any circumstances. This holds true for the firm, its principals, and the engineering staff who may be involved with the client. We have this policy because we believe doing otherwise fosters corruption. In addition, we believe that consultants should do everything possible to avoid interfering with the working relationship between staff and elected officials.
- “Revolving Door Hiring” (also called “Targeted Hiring”) is prohibited. We do not hire staff from client agencies for a period of two years after the departure from the agency. We have this policy to avoid any appearance that we are retained for any reason other then the value we deliver.
- We do not work for developers. This is due to the fact that it avoids any appearance that we may be influenced when helping local government manage growth.
